Seaman Dan Thursday Island

I'm off to the tip of Cape York this week so here is some great examples of musical talent that has originated from that area. I last saw Seaman Dan at a benefit given in Innisfail in 2006 for Cyclone Larry victims. The Mills sisters I was lucky to see many years ago on Thursday Island.

Cyclone Yasi

It's less than 5 years ago that I was writing about Cyclone Larry and the devastation it caused at Mission Beach and surrounding areas. Now I have to write about Cyclone Yasi which if anything is much worse. It just doesn't seem fair.

We all have houses that can be rebuilt from cyclone damage, but for much of the wildlife, they have lost not only their homes, but also all sources of food. 5 years ago, after "Larry" we saw many starving birds, including cassowaries, and also other hungry rainforest animals. Mission Beach Wildcare will be working to ensure these critters have a continual supply of food, and encourage all the wonderful local people to again set up feeding stations close to where the rainforest previously was. Any critters not able to find food or make use of a feeding station will be taken into care for rehabilitation.

Most of our carers have no phone or electricity, and are dealing with property damage etc. but we are still able to take wildlife emergency calls thank to Jenny in Speewah who has worked tirelessly since Wednesday to ensure all orphans are safe and happy.

The Mission Beach Wildcare premises at Mission Beach has fared quite well, but the two roller doors at the front of the building are wrecked and some items have had wind and water damage.

Cyclone Yasi presentation from Courier Mail

I know this is from a Murdoch owned paper but he has a monopoly here in Queensland.

Unfortunately good journalism and indeed journalist qualifications are often thin on the ground these days. This item from Grog's Gamut about Cyclone Yasi is a good example and another reason why I would never pay money for a Murdoch paper and that includes our declining daily The Cairns Post.

Winds are easing in Cairns and we remain without electricity, but no serious damage.. We are the lucky ones. Hearing stories of serious damage down at Mission Beach and Tully which bore the brunt of the eye of the cyclone..

Environment Center, before Bike the Earth heads off overseas. We would love

so in action. Sometimes this has come when resignation has or is about to
set in helping to lift them from this space into optimistic recommitted
action. We have also had the pleasure to inspire individuals who have not
been so active to make a deep personal commitment to be part of the change
that we have been documenting all through Australia.
