Flying over Barron Falls 21/03/11

An early morning flight out of Cairns heading north past the Barron Gorge and Kuranda. Click in the photo to enlarge. There is still quite a bit of water coming down the river and as a result the falls are still quite spectacular. On the far side of the Gorge you can see the track of the Kuranda railway line and to the right of the falls you can just make out the towers of the Kuranda cableway. The dam at the top of the falls provides water for the hydro electric power station located in the Gorge below the falls.

An Interview with Bear Stanley 1995

A rare interview with Bear Stanley. On several occasions Bear graced the studios of former Cairns community radio station 4CCR in the late nineties and was certainly a larger than life character. Bear passed away on the weekend in a tragic car accident on the Kennedy Highway near Mareeba. Here is a rare radio interview conducted with Bear around this time this time (not from 4CCR unfortunately).

The waiting game

Quite a crowd at the Flecker Botanical Gardens this weekend as visitors hope to see Titan Arum, the largest flower in the world in bloom. Not yet but it must be soon. Maybe the burst of fine weather we are experiencing as Cyclone Anthony drifts away from the coast might encourage 'Hannibal' and 'Spud' to do something.

STOP PRESS! Monday: It decided to open today:-)

David Rentz has been fortunate to have a closer look at these incredible plants and has some amazing photographs in his blog BunyipCo.

An early start to the wet season

On Christmas Day a small cyclone named Tasha kicked off what is looking like one of the best wet seasons we have had in years.

This was featured on Costa’s Garden Odyssey (between ads) on SBS earlier this year.
The FLC is located just behind the Cairns School of Distance Education and next door to Trinity Bay High School.
