Yorkeys Knob Beach Cairns

This year we managed to trick the weather gods with Easter falling late and combining with ANZAC Day to make an extra long weekend (apparently this won't happen again until around 2030). As a result we have had fine sunny weather - a nice change - with strong south easterly breezes which were exploited by the local kite sailors at Yorkeys Knob Beach just north of Cairns .

The sign says it all really as to why I would prefer to watch and not participate.

Something different for the long weekend: Yo Yo Ma and Lil Buck

From Spike Jonze:The other day, I was lucky enough to be at an event to bring the arts back into schools and got to see an amazing collaboration between Yo-Yo Ma and a young dancer in LA, Lil Buck. Someone who knows Yo-Yo Ma had seen Lil Buck on YouTube and put them together. The dancing is Lil Buck's own creation and unlike anything I've seen. Hope you enjoy. --Spike Jonze, http://www.openingceremony.us/entry.asp?pid=3238

Climate Change Conference Cairns 2011

In the past week in Cairns there has been a major conference event titled Greenhouse 2011 being held at the Cairns Convention Centre although most Cairns residents wouldn't have any inkling due to the minimal reporting from the local paper and news outlets. After some searching of the intertubes I have found a blog from Roger Jones which has been covering parts of the conference which will at least give some insight into what has been happening.

Flying over Barron Falls 21/03/11

An early morning flight out of Cairns heading north past the Barron Gorge and Kuranda. Click in the photo to enlarge. There is still quite a bit of water coming down the river and as a result the falls are still quite spectacular. On the far side of the Gorge you can see the track of the Kuranda railway line and to the right of the falls you can just make out the towers of the Kuranda cableway. The dam at the top of the falls provides water for the hydro electric power station located in the Gorge below the falls.

The Einasleigh Races Easter 2011

The Einasleigh Races Easter 2010

Einasleigh sits on the Eastern edge of the Newcastle Range, on the banks of the Copperfield River. Einasleigh is on the old Chillagoe to Forsayth railway now used by the Savannahlander. Once a Copper mining town, it is set among some unusual scenery with flat top hills that rise out of the grasslands.

The Einasleigh Hotel is situated close to the Copperfield Gorge

"The township of Einasleigh, originally named Copperfield, was laid out in 1900 by the mining warden on a new township reserve established near the Einasleigh Company's copper mine. Although the company had been formed only in the previous year, already two hotels, a store, a billiard room, and butcher and baker shops were being built and funds were being collected for a school. The town briefly became the largest population centre in the shire during construction of the Chillagoe Company's Etheridge Railway in the years 1907-10. After the closure of the mine in the 1920s, however, the township almost disappeared and was saved from extinction only by its location on the railway." - Etheridge Shire Council
